Updates on Our Recent Accomplishments

Who we are
The Franklin County Humane Society (FCHS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization comprised entirely of volunteers from Franklin County and throughout the state and country. It was formed in 2002 to help solve the problem of unwanted dogs and cats in this region. Its long-term goal is to build an animal shelter where pets can find safe refuge until they can be adopted to permanent homes. FCHS' immediate goals are to develop a strong foster program to remove adoptable animals from the Franklin County Animal Control Facility and to decrease the number of unwanted dogs and cats in Franklin/North Wake counties through spay/neuter public education programs.

Great things to come
In the summer of 2005, a Task Force was created by the County Commissioner to make recommendations for improvements at the County-Run Animal Control Facility. It has been a long road but the County has agreed to team up with the Humane Society to start implementing those recommendations and improving Animal Welfare not only at Animal Control, but throughout the county.
The six recommendations which are to be implemented through joint efforts of The Humane Society and the County are as follows:

1)     Transition from Gas Chamber to lethal injection for the euthanization process (effective as of 4/12/2006).

2)     Bring the current Animal Control Facility up to code or build new facility (Shelter Committee has met with same Architect that is currently building Warren & Cumberland County Shelters).

3)     Incorporate a low-cost spay/neuter & rabies program within the County (Spay/Neuter Committee currently seeking public funding & working with SNAP & their PALS for low-income households to spay& neuter as many pets in Franklin County while at the same time seeking out grants to fund the project on a larger level).

4)     Increase in public awareness/educate on animal related issues. (Humane Society attends as many Franklin County Events as possible and speaks on the issues at hand and how the tax payers can help. Also on the importance of spaying or neutering their pet.

5)     Increasing the adoption rate from the Animal Control Facility.(Public Hours already changed M–F 9 a.m. to 5 pm and Thursday 5 pm to 7 pm)

6)     Increase the use of FCHS volunteers within Animal Control. (FCHS already has volunteers that go to AC twice a week and take pictures & cross post to other rescue groups. Once the New facility is up and running, there will be more volunteer opportunities available for both FCHS members as well as the general public. There will be an application process that will reviewed by FCHS Board & AC has the right dismiss any volunteer at any time)
